Bruichladdich 18-Year-Old Islay Single Malt Whisky, 50%

The first permanent 18 Year Old single malt in the wider Bruichladdich portfolio, The Bruichladdich Eighteen is a true coming of age bottling. When the distillery was reopened in 2001, the Bruichladdich team set out to reconnect land and dram, championing its raw ingredients, introducing the concept of terroir to the whisky world, and supporting the local community.

In pursuit of flavour and to support the agricultural community on Islay, Bruichladdich began working with a farmer in 2004 to raise a crop of locally grown barley. This pioneering trial has now expanded to 20 vital farming partners today who grow over 50% of the distillery’s barley for total production.

Bottled at 50% ABV and made up of this first crop of Islay grown barley, along with Organically, grown grain and varietals from the Scottish Mainland, The Bruichladdich Eighteen is fully traceable, from farm to glass.

Tasting Notes from the Distillery

The Bruichladdich Eighteen is full bodied and beautifully fragrant. Honey, butterscotch and citrus orange open on the nose, with a medley of tropical fruits and toasted mellow oak lingering on the palate.

Cask Maturation

Bruichladdich 18 has been matured exclusively on Islay in primarily bourbon casks, showcasing the optimal expression of Bruichladdich single malt. These bourbon casks, together with a small number of sauternes and Port casks, are vatted and married for nine months before bottling - balancing Bruichladdich’s signature floral and fruity character.

About the distillery

The Bruichladdich distillery on Islay is at the forefront of environmental action in Scotland's whisky industry. A recent project launched in 2021 aims to use sustainable energy to heat the distillery, creating only water as a waste product, eliminating all CO2 emissions.

Alongside their environmental credentials, Bruichladdich also proudly practices a very traditional approach to distilling that is fairly radical today. All their Single Malt Whiskies are based on Scottish Barley, with around half of that coming from Islay itself, and 5% organically grown.

Three whiskies in different styles are produced at Bruichladdich: The unpeated Bruichladdich bottles, the heavily peated Port Charlotte, and the ultra-heavily peated Octomore.

All Bruichladdich's whisky focus on terroir, quality, and careful cask maturation, with a degree of detail seen in few distilleries anywhere else in the world.
